The Good Girls Revolt A Reading List

The Good Girls Revolt A Reading List When Amazon released the pilot episode of The Good Girls Revolt last year, I crossed my fingers that it would get picked up for a full season. It did, and as soon as it was released, I binge-watched the entire thing. I have no regrets. The acting is stellar, the writing is smart, and the characters are memorable. Based on Lynn Povitch’s book with the same title, The Good Girls Revolt recounts Povitch’s employment at Newsweek (thinly veiled as News of the Week  in the show) in the late 60s and early 70s. What at first appeared to be an exciting job for a young woman soon became a prime example of employment discrimination: women were not allowed to write for the magazine. Povich spearheaded the the first class action lawsuit by women journalistsand it inspired other women in the media to quickly do the same. Below is a GGR inspired reading list, designed to add context to the show, demonstrate how far the feminist movement has come, and how very far we still have to go. Race, Women, and Class by Angela Davis Every political and social movement must be understood in historical context. The women’s liberation movement wasn’t conceived out of thin air in the late 60s, early 70s, and who better to elucidate that context than the great Angela Davis. Race,  Women, and Class was published in 1983â€"-a little over 10 years from when the so-called “Good Girls” filed their lawsuit. It provides understanding not just about how those events came to be but also why we are still embroiled in many of the same conflicts for gender equality so many years later. Crazy Salad and Scribble Scribble: Some Things About Women and Notes on Media by Nora Ephron Ephron, played brilliantly by Grace Gummer, appears in only 6 of the seasons first 10 episodes but the impact she has on the women (and the show) is lasting. For Ephron’s own thoughts on women and the media, look no further than Crazy Salad and Scribble Scribble: Some Things About Women and Notes on the Media.   The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan Many of us are familiar with her description womens unhappiness in the 50s and 60s as “the problem that has no name” but what is perhaps less known is how the book came to be: Friedan initially tried to publish a piece about her findings in a magazineâ€"-only no publication would take it. By 1970, she was well on her way to being one of the most important voices in second-wave feminism but her difficulty finding a magazine that considered her work relevant unintentionally foreshadowed challenges to come. Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center by bell hooks Also, all of bell hooks. Fire in my Soul: Eleanor Holmes Norton and  Joan Steinau Lester The TV depiction of how the so-called “Good Girls” began working with Eleanor Holmes Norton varies slightly from the real story (in the show, she approaches them at a consciousness- raising meeting; in truth, she was the third lawyer they women met with and the only one who would take their case). What is consistent between the two narratives, is the instrumental role Eleanor Holmes Norton  played in the Newsweek (or News of the Week) lawsuit. Fire in My Soul documents the illustrious life of Holmes Norton, from her days at the ACLU to her achievements as a Congresswoman. Sisterhood is Powerful edited Robin Morgan A revised and updated version of the 1970 collection of essays was released in 2003, it’s worth taking a look at the original version. With essays by Eleanor Holmes Norton and Frances M. Beal, as well as the N.O.W. Bill of Rights, it’s easy to see why the American Library Association included the anthology on their list of “The 100 Most Influential Books of the Twentieth Century. The Good Girls Revolt: How the Women of Newsweek Sued their Bosses and Changed the Workplace by Lynn Povich Watch the show first, then check out the story as it really happened. Or vice-versa.   Love Story by Erich Segal The story of Oliver and Jennifer appears several times in Season One of GGR. It’s 1970 and all the ladies are reading it. The iconic novel tells the story of two young college students who fall madly in love with each other, only to be torn apart by tragedy. The book was wildly popularâ€"-a 1971 Gallup poll suggested that one in every five Americans had read it; the women in The Good Girls Revolt are no exception. The novel is as much a part of the fabric of the 70s as the long paisley dresses and shag carpets. Yes, a few main characters are reading and talking about it but it’s part of the background as well: peripheral characters read it while waiting at bars or tuck a copy into their nightstands. Fun fact: Some had speculated that a young Al Gore was the inspiration for the book’s male protagonist but the muse was actually Gore’s college roommate, Tommy Lee Jones. Segal was on sabbatical at Harvard when he met the roommates. (Can someone please write a Love Story between c ollege roommates Al Gore and Tommy Lee Jones?) The Black Panthers: Portrait of an Unfinished Revolution  edited by Brian Shih and Yohuru Williams The Women’s Liberation Movement certainly wasn’t the only civil rights issue taking the stage in the late 60s and early 70s. The Black Panthers were a source of significant controversy as they attempted to highlight the systematic racism facing Black Americans. The Panthers are a peripheral storyline in GGR, one of the reporters at News of the Week attempts to write a story about The Panthers but, having little understanding of the realities of discrimination, kind of misses the point. For a much more nuanced and insightful portrayal of The Black Panthers, check out this book.

White Supremacy Racism and AI Strangely Mix - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 6 Words: 1859 Downloads: 8 Date added: 2019/02/05 Category Society Essay Level High school Topics: Racism Essay Did you like this example? John Berger in the essay, ‘Ways of Seeing† (1972), argues that â€Å"a class cut off from its past is far less free to choose and to act as a people or class that has been able to situate itself in history.† Berger supports his argument by describing how hierarchies create lower classes through the mystification of history, especially the history of art. The authors apparent purpose is to bring awareness to reproduction, to the regime and to art history that has been manipulated by the upper class through mystification. Berger’s intended audience is the majority who have no clue that they have been removed from the past by those in power. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "White Supremacy Racism and AI Strangely Mix" essay for you Create order Hence, Andy Wachowskis The Matrix run parallel with Berger’s â€Å"Ways of Seeing. Agent Smith, the antagonist, represents the art historian whose job is to implement the design of the upper class or AI. In the first place, Agent Smith’s role was similar to the art historian, because their tasks were to keep the masses bling with the bill pill mentality. Secondly, by doing so, the masses were locked into the reproduction through the mystification that has/had them drunk with business as usual. Morpheus and Trinity continued the search for the One; who was Neo. Subsequently, he was the one who would follow the rabbit as Trinity suggested through an encrypted message. Eventually, Neo would fight to bring awareness to the masses that, AI or upper class, had created a system of reproduction, more importantly, keeping the masses cut off from the reality of their present conditions by the blue mentality and mystification. Berger’s â€Å" art historian.† is seen in many present-day institutions, above all, it is the representation of the capitalistic ruling class that dominates all levels of society, that being the case, Agent Smith appeared to be all-powerful, but in reality, he to was a subject of the powers to be. Hence, Berger’s art historian was and is under the control of the same forces. Therefore, he would explain away the true meaning that the artist intends to provoke. By denying the real purpose of the painting, the narrative is being changed to support the story the upper class or powers to be desires. Berger implied that the art historian perspective was a control mechanism of those in authority to change history to fit their agenda. Therefore, the true meaning of the painting has distortions. Meaning the art historian has also manipulated the tone and context. Agent Smith represents the art historian by managing the past to serve the present. In doing so, the m assed continue living inside the web of deception. This deception is the fuel that keeps the upper class in power. Agent Smith is the primary antagonist of The Matrix and like the art historian a tool to manipulate present realities of the masses. With that said, Trinity was Agent Smith’s first antagonist whose primary goal was to remove Neo from the environment of the comformist; she was also the best hacker in the resistance. With said skills, she knowingly guided Neo to Morpheus for training, because Morpheus believe he was the one that would be willing to learn the truth. The blue pill people are the conformist; they comply no matter what. Isaiah Lavender, argues that â€Å"Supremacy means the belief of one groups supreme authority or power, and it develops from prejudice. Prejudice leads to discrimination, where one group discerns and acts oppressively on those differences categorically rather than individually.† Is this not the case of the art historian as wel l as Agent Smith. Being the tools of the powers to be and or AI. Trinity and Morpheus were in the struggle against supremacy and prejudice, that run parallel with the forces behind the distortion of the art historian deceptions and The Matrix and mystification. John Berger argues, knowing art is decisive for our knowledge of the past, which alter the way we are involved in the present. The reality that paintings can be mystified or their intent can get convoluted due to â€Å"study assumptions† and influential figures telling us what to think concerning stated pictures becomes a more significant event than just perplex art but mystifying our lives and our beliefs on the past. Those tools of supremacy and prejudice are equal to the blue pill and red pill. Both Berger and Morpheus sounded the alarm to the oppressed class with the hope of empowering them, Berger went even further and explained the dangerous effects of mystification by stating that â€Å"the powers to be used the art of the past to change history for a privileged ruling class.† (11) Berger used the term art historian, but in reality, the system is White Supremacy Racism. It not all-inclusive, but those three-words justifies the mystery. This system was created about 500 hundred years ago along with the distortion in art painting to rob the majority from the history that is rightfully theirs. However, not understanding that White Supremacy Racism is a financial system base on lies for a small minority; the masses suffer from the blue pill mentality. Like in The Matrix many stay willingly ignorant of the myths that entrapped them. Agent Smith made such a statement; the masses go about their daily live ignorant to the fact that they are the energy that fuel system of supremacy. It is this participation of the masses which allow the mystification to continue, because of the blinder’s each choice to accept. Morpheus on the other is the leader of the resistance and his continued belief that he would find the one who would be willing to see The Matrix for what it indeed was. Suppression. This run parallel with mystification creating the misunderstanding of what artists were trying to convey. The Matrix support Berger statement, bec ause one could be the conformist: who surrenders their ability to analyze and appreciate art, yet the conformist unknowing assist the â€Å"privileged minority† who can instead mystify the truth and â€Å"invent a history which can retrospectively justify the role of the ruling class† (11). Berger, as well as Wachowski, provides evidence that White Supremacy Racism, along with AI are the tools that keep the ruling class in power. Berger has shown the readers’ that art is manipulated by the ruling class to invent the history they desire to further the agenda of conformity. And Wachowski demonstrates through his characters in The Matrix that only a white guy could be the savior, to justify the system of white supremacy racism as one of the many tools in the arsenal of the ruling class. Morpheus, the painter, has painted a belief that he would find the one who would be willing to listen to what is real and care the message to others. Now, Cypher another non-white character decides to turn on the messages and return to the life of comfort and conformity. Berger â€Å"Ways of Seeing’ alert the masses to such conditions and behaviors of the ruling class. Berger and Wachowski illustrate the idea that higher class manipulate societies (middle/lower class) per ception of art (history), to keep people oppressed from their ideas with the use of mystification. Though these classes are kept in a mystified state to govern and maintain their power, they held over the other classes. Like Berger’s art historian Agent Smith in The Matrix promotes mystification and reproduction as an act of conforming history to serve the machines and their false world. The false world maintains the structure of classes in society in both Berger’s and The Matrix. With the change of perspectives, one can bring change to reality and history, one free reproduction and an oppressed society made by mystification. With that said, Hope Reeves questions, â€Å"whether life is real or an illusion and who is responsible for the actions of individuals people themselves or some higher power?† (18) In The Matrix, the AI needed the code that Morpheus had for the human underworld (Zion) where the humans lived unconnected from the machines. Berger sounded t he alarm about the upper class and its systems of manipulating the masses by using humans as fuel for reproduction. And this reproduction is a tool in itself because it allows the individual to assume a fake part in the decision making. But as Agent Smith character would demonstrate, one is part on the Supremacist tracking devices of machines. Berger and Wachowski see reproduction as hyperreality, Berger considers the original art or painting as an accurate reflection of the past that rightfully belongs to the masses. However, this original has distortions. Wachoski’s Agent Smith appetite for viral replication as a queer form of reproduction. Suggesting that the heteronormative reproduction is the black family while indicating that queer sexuality resides in the body of a white gay man. Berger argument that this type of duplication of art devalues the imagery and provides a different context that highlights the distortions and changes of the artwork. The camera allows masses to see paintings that were once removed by the masses, and by such reproduction, it fragments the uniqueness of the image, by removing it from its original time and space. Once the historical and social connection, as well as the meaning and value, is reduced, then the context within the art only serves the small minority. For instance, Agent Smith alluded to the recessive gene in a particular group of human that was their downfall, because they overused the resource available and natural section demands any group that does this they must, in the end, be wiped out. However, to exit the virtual world, one first needs to know where he has been. One has to chart the territory already covered, from the first stammerings of infography and â€Å"computer-generated images.† â€Å"Reproduction] destroys the uniqueness of its image. As a result, the meaning changes. Or, more exactly, its meaning multiplies and fragments into many meanings,† Berger puts very beautifully, although the notion most likely saddens the author (19). â€Å"Way of Seeing† demonstrates how falsehood and truth strangely mix. First, the aristocracy creates a system of White Supremacy Racism, then pretends that it is all inclusive, to attract other whites, then they instill the idea that they are better than people of color and the womenfolk. Now the art historian goes to work duplication the plan of the aristocratic system who fuel are those who lack the knowledge of the real meaning. Wachowski’ s Agent Smith was the primary example of this type of mystification whose goal was to serve the false narrative and justify it with force when necessary. White Supremacy Racism is a capitalistic system of power and control, and with the use of the current mediums of reproduction, the comfort zones reach into every aspect of society. This type of falsehood maintains the status quo of class and hierarchy in Berger’s and or in the case of The Matrix it cements control of the masses. The capitalistic mechanism of reprod uction is a significant argument for Wachowski and Berger who understood that reproduction served the falsehood of the ruling class through the arts as well as to justify the destruction and or depletion of the natural resources through propagation.

Plastic Is The Major Staple Of Everyday Life - 1291 Words

Take a look around, plastic is everywhere. From the cars that we drive, to the containers that our food comes in. Nearly, everything we come in contact with contains some sort of plastic. This source has simplified our lives in various ways and has become a major staple of everyday life. We use it for entertainment, communication, and to save lives. But, no matter how convenient plastics are, they still seem to do more damage than good to ourselves and the environment. Plastics were not always made from refined oils and gases like they are today. In 1869 inventor John Wesley Hyatt created and patented a new material named celluloid. Celluloid was made from the cellulose in cotton, a natural polymer. Today plant cellulose is being looked at as a base material for a greener plastic. This early plastic was able to be made into many colors and molded into an array of shapes. It took the place of many natural resources that were becoming scarce, such as ivory and tortoise shells used to make combs. In the beginning, making items from celluloid was labor intensive. Items had to be molded in small batches and hand polished. It was also unstable causing factories to catch fire. (freinkel) The invention of synthetic plastic forever changed culture and the environment. In 1930s, during the German war, scientist were ordered to make something that was cheap and durable. Why Do We Cry When Watching a Film Free Essays

This is the feature from BBClearningenglish. com for more information and _____ the view go to the BBCworldservice. com ____ post card. We will write a custom essay sample on Why Do We Cry When Watching a Film or any similar topic only for you Order Now R: hello, I’m Rob and welcome to 6 minute english. With me today in studio is Ms. Feifei. Hello there. F: Hi Rob. R:In today’s programme we are discussing films make us cry and why we actually enjoy watching something that makes us burst into tears or another words to cry out loud. We are also looking at the language associated with crying. So crying out loud surely this is something that you have done, Feifei? F: I’m afraid yes so I have done that. R: Is there a particular film is made you cry? F: I think you have to see the film Turner and Hooch. And how about you Rob? R:Well, being a man obviously I will never cry well almost. There is an old children’s film called The Railway children. At the end, when the children’s father returns from exile, his daughter runs out the station platform shouting: My daddy my daddy. That makes me misty-eyed. F: You ‘re big softy. R: I suppose I’m. Now Feifei, before we discuss this subject further, here’s your question for today: Which film has won the most ever Oscars awards? Is this.. . Ben Hur b. Slumdog Millionaire or c. Gone with the wind F: I think I’m going to go for answer b. Slumdog millionaire. R: ok. Let’s find out if you are right at the end of programme. Of course, the 85th academy awards better known as the Oscars were held recently and there was one major weepy that won several awards. F: a weepy? you mean a film that makes us cry. R: Yes and that film was Lei Miserables. I have seen it really is a tearjerker. It literally causes tears to roll down our checks. So why do we chose to see the film or movie that makes us get so emotional ? F: I suppose it ‘s the mark of a good film if it causes us to reveal our emotions. A really sad story if it’s well acted and directed, can really make us blub (another word for crying). And a sob srory one where the character tries to get our sympathy for him or her can have the same effect. But what is it about a film that can makes us cry when we can’t cry in real life? R:Well, according to psychologist Dr Everon Lemon, we allow our emotions to be imfluenced when we watch a film. What word does she use to mean † influenced†? Dr. Everon Lemon: People want to have their emotions manipulated, because then they are allowed to have them. We spend so much of our life being told you shouldn’t feel like that, you don’t feel like that when in fact we do you like that. And both the visual and the auditory allows us to know what emotion we are meant to feel. F: So Dr Everon Lemon says we like to have our emotions manipulated, influenced by a film. In real life we told how we should feel. R: But when watching a film, at the cinema for example, we can let our emotions loose. But there is something else in a film that effects our emotions and gives us goose bumps or a feeling that makes our hair stand on end and we get little bumps on our skin. F: Yes, Dr Lemon says there are visual and auditory clues that provokes our feelings so that is the style of the pictures and the music or sound effects that are used. R:( music) Like the music in the Jaw movie although that’s not really a tearjerker. F: oh Come on, Rob. I bet you cried at the scary bits. R: I told you men don’t cry. Although there is one film that has had grown men crying their hearts out which means they have been crying uncontrollably. That is the film Toy Story 3. F: Really R:Yes, I don’t think it’s because the film is sad but because watching it makes men nostalgic about their young and perhap they can see their kids reflected in the story too. F: Well I bet these men were crying alone. They wouldn’t want to be seen crying in public. R: Well not according to Phillip Sheppard who composes or writes film music. He thinks letting our feelings out, he calls it by catharsis is better in a group. Mr. Phillip Sheppard: All of us sort of need to find a catharsis, especially within a group to have this sort of place to have an emotional response. It ends up being something when you need to have that kind of release. As British people we are terribly bad at it I think. But when people find an outlet for it such as a film, especially when they are in a crowd, people’s emotional responses are much more instantaneously responsive. R: So he says we all need to find a catharsis. Being in a group is a good place for letting your emotions out. When you watch a film with others you react to other people’s emotional reponses. F: So if one person cries then other people will start to cry too. Unless you are British of course. R: That is what Phillip Sheppard thinks and we could say: It’s a crying shame, meaning it’s regrettable or it’s an unfortunate situation. F: Ok, Rob well let’s not cry over spilt milk. R: Huh F: Let’s not get upset over something quite small. Can I Just have the answer to today’s question, please? R: Yes, of course. Earlier I asked you which film has won the most ever Oscars? F: And I said Slumdog Millionaire. R: And you were wrong. The answer is actually Ben Hur. The 1959 Film has won 11 awards the same number has also been won by Titanic and The Lord of the rings, The return of the King. Well Feifei before we go, please could you remind us of some of the cryng-related words and phrases that we have heard today. F: Sure. Video recording act 1984 Essay Example For Students

Video recording act 1984 Essay As more and more people in the UK started to rent and buy videos for home use, it was thought that some kind of act should be passed that protected the public’s intrest. The video recordings act was brought in to prevent people from making videos of offensive nature (to some people) and then selling that footage to people who are deemed not suitable to see the footage (under aged) or people who are unaware of the nature of the video. In 1984 the act was passed through parliament and the BBFC (British Board Of Film Censorship) was designated to make sure that videos that are offered for sale or hire in the UK have the correct certificate. It was felt that videos needed to have a stricter rating system than cinema films as they could easily be obtained by under aged persons. The act does not really concentrate on the welfare of animals, but does stop films being made which depict scenes of cruelty, sexual (human/animal) intercourse/activities and mutilation. This act does work in relation with other acts that does protect animals, such as the Protection Of Animals Act 1911, Criminal Justice Public Order and The Performing Animals (regulation) Act 1925 . The act may also effects people who have unlicensed videos for home use (extreme cases)The video recordings act states that:1) Videos must be classified by designated authority (The president or vice president of the BBFC). That the certificate must reflect the videos suitability for home use. 2) Videos Must Not Contain Graphic Footage of –Explicit sexual acts between humans or human/animal. Cruelty of animals (as stated in the Protection of Animals Act 1911). Extreme violence to animals or people (particularly children and women). Enjoyment from sexual assaults (human or animal). Scenes that would cause great distress to Animals. These are the main points that effect animals, the rest of the act talks about the classification of the videos and footage in relation to people. 3) That it is an offence to sell such videos to any one under the certificate age. Videos are still allowed to show mild cruelty (depending in what context), for example when they hurl the cow out of the castle in Monty pythons quest for the Holy Grail (15 cert). A Recent Amendment that affects the actCriminal Justice ; Public Order Amendment to the Video Recordings Act 1994 This requires that the Board pays special regard to: harm to potential viewers (including potential underage viewers). Harm to society through viewers behaviour violent behaviour and incidents horrific behaviour or incidents human sexual activities If you sell or hire out pre-recorded video tapes then this Act applies to you. Also the act was slightly changed in 1993 to make certain amendments under sections 1,2,3,4 and 5 that affect prosecutions. The act states that it does not apply to material that:Is designed to inform (cruelty connection), educate or instruct people. Is concerned with sport (bull fighting), religion or music This exemption is however forfeited if the work shows, gross scenes of the following: Human sexual activity or acts of forced sexual activity. Mutilation or torture of, or other gross violence towards, humans or animals. Techniques likely to be useful in the commission of offences. †Exemption is also forfeit if a work is likely to encourage sexual activity or acts of force associated with it, violence, or the commission of criminal offences. In such cases the work must be classified by the BBFC before it can be legally distributed.†As it has been stated before, the BBFC controls which films are released in the UK and what certificate they are given. However it is not the BBFC who is left to control the enforcing of the act but the local council fair trading standards officers. Due to the new 1993 amendments the time limit for prosecutions is 3 years, if the offender has not been prosecuted after 3 years no charges are enforced. Any person that is prosecuted for an offence under the act may have their sale of goods licence removed and face either a fine or a term in jail. .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf , .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf .postImageUrl , .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf , .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf:hover , .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf:visited , .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf:active { border:0!important; } .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf:active , .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub19b85aa06b9ea93b5ee1dab17009ccf:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Rate of the Reaction of Catechol to Benzoquino EssayAs it has clearly been seen the act really was made to prevent the public gaining the â€Å"wrong† type of viewing material. That they may go on and put into practice, such as the James Bulcher case were 2 boys apparently re-enacted a childsplay film on a younger boy. If the boys had never seen a film such as childsplay then they may have not performed such an act. It also may stop certain acts of cruelty on animals from being performed in this country, if someone made a film where animals were treated incorrectly then it would not be published, so there would be no point in making the film as they would lose m oney and could be held for charges under the animal protection act 1911. The act can also stop animals from getting to distressed, as the BBFC will not pass a film in which they think an animal has suffered great distress. An example of this is in the film No Fear, No Die (a French film) which has scenes of animal cruelty and cock fighting. No animals where actually harmed in the making of the film and the cock fighting scenes were fake (or the blades were at least). There are loopholes in the act such as computer games, a game called carmageddon in which you gain points by running over people and animals. This game did have a 15 certificate but the question still remains would it have been allowed to be released if it was a film?. Bibliography:

Free Essays on Fetish In The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Fetish in the Rocky Horror Picture Show The theme of fetish abounds throughout the entire movie, beginning with the main characters entrance into the castle which is inhabited by a group of transvestites from Transylvania. The transvestites are dressed thematically in provocative clothing representing sexual fetish including bondage. Within this theme, the clothing of some characters is sparse and often limited to only under-garments and shoes. Typical fetish objects, high heels, stockings and under-garments are openly displayed and typical apparel throughout the entire movie, not dependent upon the scene. Taboo, enters into the picture when it seems apparent that the dances and scenes that occur are overtly sexually explicit. The dancing is very sexual and the set up of the bedrooms within the castle lend themselves to being what would typically be considered pornographic. There are scenes featuring red light, often found in sexual connotations and areas of prostitution. There is a common theme of sexual tendencies throughout the entire cast of characters and it is seen that many of the characters are intimately involved with one another, as well as many others. The movie takes the viewer out of the realm of reality and into this fictitious place, where no one can tell the time that has elapsed. The only mention of time is at the very start of the movie, with the clock striking midnight, and the singing of Time Warp. Within this time reality relationship, it seems that the characters are stuck within the castle walls, not being allowed to leave by the master. The creation of Rocky, as a sex symbol is overtly fetish, especially because it denotes the undercurrents of homosexuality, involving transvestites. The entire film is revolutionary in that it goes out on a limb and stretches the limits of cinematography for the era in which it was produced and presented. Because of this, an entire fetish culture has aris... What to Expect When Getting Your Drug Test At Work

What to Expect When Getting Your Drug Test At Work Pre-employment drug screening is definitely a practice you should be aware of. Depending on the job you get, your sobriety can affect your job performance- even the safety and lives of other people. Employers are eager to make sure they can trust you and your judgment. Some employers are actually federally obligated to screen employees, such as the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Tests are much more likely in trucking industry, aviation, or mass transit, or for anyone hoping to work with NASA or the Department of Defense.Test TypesThere are two kinds of drug tests: the 5-panel test screen, and the 10-panel test. The 5-panel test screens for the following:CocaineAmphetamine/MethamphetamineOpiates (like heroin, codeine, and morphine)Phencyclidine or PCPTHC (marijuana)The 10-panel test screens for the following:CocaineAmphetamineMethamphetamineOpiates such as heroin, codeine and morphinePhencyclidine or PCPTHC (marijuana)Pro poxypheneMethadoneBarbituratesBenzodiazepinesSome marijuana use might go undetected, particularly if the THC has been removed, as in medical marijuana). Other drugs, like prescription pain medication, might show up. If you’re using any prescription drugs, you should disclose this information before the test- particularly pain medications, certain weight-loss supplements, and drugs like Xanax, Valium, Rohypnol, and Ativan. And if you live in a state where recreational pot use is legal, or you have a prescription for medical marijuana, you might want to consider chatting with an employment lawyer about your options if a drug test scenario comes up.Know the Rules and Your RightsA lot of employers reserve the right to test again once you’re employed. They can ask for a test regularly or randomly, and can demand a test on short notice, giving employees no time to try and cheat. There are limits to how much an employer is allowed to test, given the invasion of privacy. If you feel your rights have been violated, consult the employment laws of your state. Remember: you are also not required to take a test from a prospective employer. Just keep in mind, that might well cost you the job.Know  What You’re Getting IntoA few things to keep in mind to make sure you don’t lose a job to a failed drug test:Most tests are urine tests, though this is changing. Saliva tests (easier to pass as they only go back three days), and hair tests (which go back 90 days) are also possible. Employers could even ask to test your blood or nails. You can’t just drink an enormous quantity of water or exercise heavily to get a particular drug to clear your system- that’s mostly a myth.Certain drugs will stay in different people’s systems for different lengths of time. This depends on a number of factors, including individual metabolism, rate and quantity of use, the concentration, etc. The sensitivity of the test is also variable.

Second midterm Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Second midterm - Essay Example ar II, which also gets described as the short American century, represented a period of continuous prosperity for the American government and its economy. The shift in the international economic order has led to the US citizens’ increasing sense of disempowerment. The changes witnessed in the classical world economy have decreased the US government’s effectiveness in managing its economy. The change from the Bretton woods based international economic system to a greater international economic integration based system has seen the US lose grip on it domestic economy. The Bretton wood’s system had contributed to the US leading the international economic order between the 1940s and 1970s. The Bretton wood’s system had allowed America to focus on the politics of its national security through the international economic integration it promoted. Through the Bretton wood’s system, the US spent less of its money in rebuilding the economies of Western Europe and Japan. The collapse of the Bretton Wood’s system meant that the US had to put preference in international markets over its domestic considerations of national security. The new contemporary international economic world order has seen countries such as China and Singapore also emerge as serious global economic powerhouses. With the new found international economic system, the relevance of the dollar has dwindled as each and every country strives to use their currency as a means of trade. The US massive foreign debt has inflicted heavily on the predominance held before by its dollar as an international currency. The contemporary international economy that took over the American led Bretton Wood’s system has also allowed for almost every country in the globe to engage in international trade, finance, and investment (Frieden 153). Under the previous classical economic order, only the US and its closest allies had control in setting up terms for international trade. The changing global environment created

Effective mediated communication Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Effective mediated communication - Essay Example Few people write letters or read the newspaper anymore as these are seemingly archaic methods of communication. Neither provides instant information, a tool that is today essential for businesses to compete and simply a fact of life that is taken for granted for most in the U.S. â€Å"Nowadays, we think nothing of emailing our aunts in Germany and getting an answer back within minutes, or seeing the latest streaming video full of up to the minute news† (Boswell, 2006). There are as many disadvantages as advantages offered in this mode of communication as messages are misread, misdirected, misunderstood or simply go missing. While several of these issues don’t arise when people are given the opportunity to communicate on a face-to-face basis, an entirely new set of issues are introduced as messages are forgotten, lose their focus or the participants become sidetracked on other issues or other external events. The purpose of this paper is to discover just what are the str engths and weaknesses of face to face communication as they compare with the strengths and weaknesses of hard copy communication methods. For many people, face to face communication is the best means of interacting with another person for a variety of reasons. People who communicate face to face are obviously able to do so in a real-time format, meaning that it occurs for both people at the same time as they are looking at each other. When the conversation reaches a point where greater clarification or further discussion is felt necessary, this conversation has the opportunity of taking place immediately. According to Adler et al (2007), this attribute of synchronicity is the first of three significant features of oral face to face communication. The second significant feature is the richness of information that can be obtained through this method of communication. While two people are looking at each other,

â€Å"Heartland† places the audience almost a hundred years back in time, a technique that not only captivates ones mind, but also allows for the unique opportunity to witness first hand history being re-told. Richard Pearce the director of â€Å"Heartland† saw a chance within this film to white out previous interpretations of American homesteading; Pearce paints a radically new picture, which may more accurately reflect the truth behind homesteaders. The inspirations behind Pearce’s documentary â€Å"Heartland† were the personal journals of Elinore Pruitt Stewart. Stewart’s journals were published in 1914 in the form of a diary titled â€Å"Letters of a Women Homesteader† these enriched historical documents were used by Pearce in such a way that neither Stewart nor anybody else would have ever suspected.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Heartland first and foremost is a story of survival. Clyde Stewart and Elinore Randall Stewart are followed through their daily life by Pearce, their struggles embody American homesteaders across the west and their own efforts to survive in the extreme cultural and climatic conditions they all faced. Scarcity of life in all forms is a theme that is driven hard throughout Pearce’s film. The absence of food, wood, water and life create an absence of hope among the homesteaders. For Pearce homesteading was a last resort, an opportunity in a world which opportunities are limited to succeed. The grind and grit of frontier life is truly captured through Pearce’s distinctive directorial approach. His exclusive approach allows for the viewer to be almost transported back in time witness first hand to the butcher of a live pig and many other daily frontier life chores. Pearce’s depiction of homesteading within his film â€Å"Heartland† contradic ts his main source in almost all facets, thus creating a whorl wind of controversy regarding Pearce’s intensions behind his film.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Elinore Pruitt Stewart describes life dramatically different from the one â€Å"Heartland† reveals. Pearce drew upon this distinction to refute prior beliefs and truths carried by the Letters of a Women Homesteader. The Letters describe nature as a bountiful playground rich with discovery and treasures. Stewart describes a situation within her journals in which she is caught in a compromising position â€Å" here I was thirty or forty miles from home, in the mountains were no one goes in the winter and were I knew the so got ten to fifteen feet deep†(Letters p.33). Stewart’s casual attitude about this situation she has found herself in, along with the fact she did survive when she discovered safe haven within a conveniently placed log cabin, directs the reader/ historical audience to draw upon false conclusions of the homesteading life.

7 up video response

Seven Up (Bruce) During the documentary, many of the fundamental concepts of development over the lifespan were displayed. Out of the â€Å"seven up† group I decided to focus on Bruce. Although the group of seven came from a very diverse socioeconomic background they are all British. I was particularly interested in how Bruce would turn out, in regards to his influences of culture, class, socioeconomic status, personal attributes, and available role models. In the Bruce's background I observed that he seemed to be a little better off than the others in the group of seven.I say this because his family sent him off to a boarding school. Boarding schools can be rather expensive relative to the institution. They are also a little stricter in disciple and learning, with a very robust discipline system. As far as socioeconomic class, I believe Bruce may have a better chance at succeeding because, according to our Human development book, â€Å"High socioeconomic status is an importa nt predictor of academic success, according to a study†¦ â€Å". One of Bruce's main sources for influence is his boarding school environment.Bruce states, â€Å"l think discipline is fair enough† which contradicts what he film says about the average 7 year not thinking too much or not understanding discipline. The film also says, â€Å"This distinction between freedom and discipline is the key to their whole future†. It's hard for me to make a creative prediction about how Bruce's racial or ethnic heritage has or will influence his future. Bruce seems to be very calm, well organized, and confident. He's a white British male living in England.Ethnically and racially he's at home with others Just like his self, so many of the customs, traditions, and language Bruce should be familiar with while growing up amongst others like imself. Bruce's gender and his influence on his sense of future prospects is another area that is hard to analyze. When Bruce speaks it's nev er for a long period of time but he always seems to reply in a short and brief but realistic answer. While some of the other seven talk about how girls â€Å"don't do what they want them to† Bruce talks about how he has a girlfriend in Africa that he might not ever see again.I would describe Bruce as a strong, calm and collective boy, he's not as fidgety as the others. Bruce seems to be very confident in what he says and wants, this may be due to his discipline. These internalizing attributes might help Bruce overcome challenges in the future such as doubt and uncertainty that could arise later in life when choices become more difficult to make. My beliefs are that Bruce has great core values because, he works well with others. In the film Bruce said that he wanted to go to Africa to help uncivilized people; this to me signals that Bruce has some type of either religious or ultraistic background which plays an important role in now Bruce see's things. Assuming that Bruce's gir lfriend from Africa was black, and the people from Africa that he want's elp are as well tells me that Bruce doesn't have a problem with diversity unlike some of the other seven. In regards to the observations I made above I truly believe that Bruce will probably go on to finish school and go to a university of some sort.At the boarding school that Bruce attends discipline is a big part of the curriculum; this leads me to think that Bruce will be good at an authoritative role. Possibly landing a Lead role as a manager, or supervisor, Just because he understood the discipline and learned from young not to have problems with authority. His knowledge of girlfriends seems to be neutral, he id say that he had more than one girlfriend, but I'm not sure if he was speaking in language that I misunderstood; meaning he had more than one friend that was a girl or he actually had a polygamous relationships. If Bruce does have his eyes on more than one girl from young, then maybe the road may lea d to divorce, but that's not to say that he is incapable of change. Lastly Bruce seems to be very content with his current state of being. He doesn't seem unhappy, but yet very certain of what he wants to accomplish; for example talking about wanting to go to Africa to help the ncivilized. In all I agree with the Jesuit proverb, â€Å"show me a child of seven, and I will give you the man†.Although it served as the inspiration of the documentary, I feel like there is a strong connection between your personalities when you're young compared to your older self. The fundamental concepts of development over the lifespan were displayed while observing Bruce and it gave me a better understanding of how Bruce would turn out; in regards to his influences of culture, class, socioeconomic status, personal attributes, and available role models
